High Average Current Electron Guns for High-Power FELs
نویسندگان
چکیده
High average power FELs require high average current electron injectors capable of generating high quality, short duration electron bunches with a repetition rate equal to the frequency of the rf linac. In this paper we propose, analyze and simulate an rf-gated, gridded thermionic electron gun for use in high average power FELs. Thermionic cathodes can provide the necessary high current, have long life times and require modest vacuums. In the proposed configuration the rf-gated grid is modulated at the fundamental and 3 harmonic of the linac frequency. The addition of the 3 harmonic on the grid results in shorter electron bunches. In this configuration, every rf bucket of the linac accelerating field contains an electron bunch. PIC simulations indicate that this approach can provide the necessary charge per bunch, bunch duration, longitudinal and transverse emittance, and repetition rate for high average power FELs operating in the IR regime. 1. Photocathode Guns for Single Pass X-ray FELs
The present state of the art in photoinjector designs will be presented in this review. We will discuss both proposed and operational photoinjectors with operating frequencies from L-band (1.424 GHz) to X-band (11.424 GHz). Also a novel pulsed DC gun will be presented. All the RF photoinjector discussed here use an emittance compensation scheme [1] [2] to align the different slices of the the e...
متن کاملOverview of Sase Experiments
The radiation characteristics of Free Electron Lasers (FEL) based on the Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) principle are very high brilliance and full transverse coherence. These properties, together with the possibility to tune it to low wavelengths, make of SASE FELs a unique synchrotron radiation source type. Linac driven SASE FELs require high peak current electron pulses with very...

From the early days of the development of free-electron lasers (FELs) the promise of high power and short wavelengths has tantalized physicists and other scientists. Recent developments in accelerator technologies and some new discoveries about the physics of FELs have allowed researchers to push the performance of FELs into new frontiers of high power, short wavelength, and ultra-short pulses....
متن کاملOn the Importance of Electron Beam Brightness in High Gain Free Electron Lasers
Linear accelerators delivering high brightness electron beams are essential for driving short wavelength, high gain free-electron lasers (FELs). The FEL radiation output efficiency is often parametrized through the power gain length that relates FEL performance to electron beam quality at the undulator. In this review article we illustrate some approaches to the preliminary design of FEL linac-...

New type of high perveance electron guns with convex cathode has been developed. Three guns described in this article are built to provide transverse electron current density distributions needed for Electron Lenses for beam-beam compensation in the Tevatron collider. The current distribution can be controlled either by the gun geometry or by voltage on a special control electrode located near ...
